The Evergreen Line – 11 km of Construction Challenges

The Evergreen Line Rapid Transit Project is the most recent addition to the SkyTrain network in Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The 11 km alignment consists of elevated and at-grade guideway sections, cut-and-cover and bored tunnels, seven stations, power substations, train operating systems, parking facilities, and a vehicle storage and light maintenance facility.

Because of the high seismicity of the region, liquefiable and soft soils posed the main challenges for the design of structures. A performance-based design approach with varying levels of performance requirements were specified for the project. Several deep foundation and ground improvement solutions were used to meet the project design objectives, while satisfying cost, schedule and site constraints. Foundation types included drilled shafts and driven steel pipe piles. Ground improvement solutions included Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) and driven timber piles.

A variety of innovative techniques were used throughout construction, including the Inlet Centre Station platform and guideway, the bored tunnel, tunnel invert and track slab, and sections of elevated guideway, all in order to open the Evergreen Line to passengers in December 2016.

Our speakers are Meiric Preece and Ali Azizian. Meiric, currently on his own, was previously a Partner with MMM Group Limited, working out of the Vancouver office. Since 1984 when he joined the company, he has amassed experience in project management, design, and construction of bridges and transit systems, both in Canada and in international contexts. In 2015 he received the APEGBC Meritorious Achievement Award, primarily for his work on rapid transit projects. On the Evergreen Line Meiric had the role of the Technical Director for SNC Lavalin’s Design Build Finance Team from the RFQ to Total completion of the Project. Ali is a Principal Specialist and Geotechnical Engineer with Tetra Tech (EBA), who were the Geotechnical Consultant for the project (except the bored tunnel section). Meiric will provide a brief overview of the project as a whole and some information on key elements of the Project. Ali will provide an overview of the subsurface ground conditions along the alignment, the selected foundation or ground improvement types and construction challenges.
