The Coast Meridian Overpass – An Incremental Launching of a Cable Stay Steel Superstructure

In early 2008, KWH partnered with SNC-Lavalin Constructors Pacific (SLCP) and with SLCP Consulting Design Engineers & International Bridge Technologies of San Diego, and embarked on an ambitious incremental launching effort for the Coast Meridian Overpass design-build project. The goal was to incrementally launch a cable-stay steel superstructure

The Coast Meridian Overpass is the first “incrementally launched” cable-stayed steel bridge in North America. The steel structure is hydraulically pushed over the CP Rail yard’s 50+ rail tracks. The structure is launched in 5 different intervals as the bridge gets added to, each section being longer that it’s predecessor. The final launch “push” was 450 meters long and weighed over 4600 tonnes. This innovative construction method has overcome many constraints holding back this essential structure which will allow a divided city to come together.

Mike Christian has over 12 years experience on various major construction projects. Mike works for SNC Lavalin who is amongst the largest and most comprehensive engineering construction firms in North America.

Chris Hall – Senior Bridge Engineer, IBT.
Chris Hall was the lead design engineer on the Coast Meridian Overpass Project with over 15 years of experience in the design of complex and cable supported structures.

KWH Constructors, a Division of George Third & Son Steel Fabricators, have been erecting and launching steel bridge superstructures, and erecting other complex structures, for more than 20 years. KWH Constructors recently received international acclaim in 2007 for launching the horizontally curved steel superstructure of the Kicking Horse Canyon Park Bridge for the Trans-Canada Highway in a mountainous, isolated region in the province of British Columbia.

Behind the Scenes – December Festive Season Reception For Members and Guests

The Directors of the BC Construction Roundtable invite you and a guest to join them at the festive year end reception. As part of our series on The Vancouver Winter Olympics we are pleased to welcome Nancy Lee, Chief Operating Officer for Olympic Broadcasting Services Vancouver.

OBSV is a B.C. based subsidiary of the International Olympic Committee. OBSV produces the video and audio coverage for all Olympic sports, Opening and Closing Ceremonies and the medal presentations at the Vancouver 2010 Games. The unbiased footage is augmented by the international rights holding broadcasters which insert play-by-play commentators, studio hosts, network branding and then transmit the signals back to their home countries.

Over 100 international networks (encompassing radio, television and new media) will broadcast from the 2010 Games. And these networks employ over 5,000 people who will be coming to Vancouver to act as producers, technicians, and commentators for the 2010 Games coverage.

Nancy Lee will talk about the years of planning work leading up to the February 12th Opening Ceremonies as OBSV grows from a current staff of 100 to 2,200 during the Games. Prior to joining OBSV, Nancy was the Head of CBC Sports. Vancouver 2010 marks the 9th time Nancy will have worked at an Olympic Games.

Victoria Wastewater Treatment Project

The BC Ministry of Environment has placed a mandate on Victoria’s Capital Regional District to plan and initiate secondary treatment for the region. A final plan must be in place by the end of 2009. The CRD is working toward providing cost effective, innovative and environmentally responsible wastewater treatment for its residents. The project will see upgrading of treatment practices in the Core Area (comprised of 7 municipalities) to account for the demands of increasing population. Considerations are taking place for presentative technologies that could be used, the number and size of plants, and the options for region-wide biosolids management and resource recovery.

Dwayne Kalynchuk is a Professional Engineer with over 27 years experience in local government. He has been a transportation consultant, a land developer in western Canada and has been General Manager of Environmental Services for the Capital Regional District in Victoria.

Currently Dwayne is Project Director for Core Area Wastewater Treatment, a project estimated at $1.0 billion and the largest of its kind in Canada.

Glotman Simpson Awarded at 2009 Canadian Consulting Engineer Awards

Celebrations continued this week at Glotman Simpson with the announcement of the 2009 Canadian Consulting Engineer Awards in Ottawa. The 41st annual awards are Canada’s highest mark of recognition for projects by Canadian engineering firms, presented by the Association of Canadian Engineering Companies and Canadian Consulting Engineer Magazine. From 60 submissions, the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion project was awarded one of 10 Awards of Excellence. Only 4 of these awards were for ‘Buildings’, with no other B.C. project awarded in this category. Full details can be seen at www.canadianconsultingengineer.com.

This follows on from Glotman Simpson’s win of The Grand CONNIE Award for Richmond Olympic Oval by BC Ready Mixed Concrete 2009 Awards for Excellence in Concrete Construction. The Oval was also presented the Special Applications, Technical Merit Award. These awards (nicknamed CONNIEs for “CONcrete CONstruction”) are the BC industry’s highest recognition of works that show vision and innovation in the use of concrete. Management of Municipal Solid Waste in Metro Vancouver – Options for Management of Waste After Recycling

Metro Vancouver has outlined ambitious waste diversion initiatives in its Zero Waste Challenge – Goals, Strategies and Actions document. Even after these initiatives have been implemented, however, over one million tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) will still require treatment and disposal. Metro Vancouver engaged a Study Team to examine the options available to deal with this MSW.

Our speaker, Konrad Fichtner, a member of the Study Team, will first discuss the three technologies that the team examined:

  1. Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) to stabilize waste before landfilling or to produce a refuse derived fuel for industrial use;
  2. Waste-to-energy (WTE) with energy recovery (electricity and heat); and
  3. Landfilling with landfill gas (LFG) utilization.

The team looked at a total of eight integrated waste management scenarios for Metro Vancouver – based on the above technologies and current practice – and Konrad will review the team’s findings. Metro Vancouver recently presented these findings at its Regional Forums and the findings will be used when updating its solid waste management plan.

Konrad Fichtner is a senior engineer with over 25 years experience in managing complex environmental projects. His technical focus is on solid waste management, with a special emphasis on integrated waste planning. Mr. Fichtner is AECOM’s Practice Lead, Waste Services, Environment. He has worked on waste management projects in Canada, USA, Germany, China, Thailand, India, Singapore and Indonesia.

Walking Tour of the Olympic Village

The 2010 Olympic Village will be closed off at the end of the month to prepare the site for the visiting athletes. This is your last chance to tour the site with Royer Bayley, a key consultant on the project. Roger has authored The Challenge Series which tells the story of Vancouver’s Olympic Village at Southeast False Creek: Millennium Water. Roger will talk about the visioning, planning, design and construction processes as well as collaboration and sustainability innovations.

Our guide, Roger Bayley, is the Design Manager for Vancouver’s 2010 Olympic Village development, Millennium Water. Roger prepared and wrote the original RFP submission for the Olympic Village on behalf of the developer, Millennium SEFC Properties Limited. Roger has also been instrumental in addressing the concerns and demands of the City of Vancouver Planning and Permitting team, the sustainability objectives, client coordination and requirements of The Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee’s 2010 ‘overlay’ and operational program for the site that will see the housing of 2800 athletes for the 2010 games. Roger has managed and directed Merrick Architecture since its inception and provides project definition, value engineering, quality control, resource management and project scheduling to clients.

Pitt River Bridge

The Pitt River Bridge and Mary Hill Interchange is the first project to be constructed as a part of the Ministry of Transportation’s ambitious Gateway Program. When the entire Gateway Program is complete, the Pitt River Bridge will provide a critical link in the North Fraser Perimeter Road and relieve a major choke point.

The scope of the project includes replacing the existing twin swing bridges that opened in 1956 and 1978 with a new cable-stayed bridge as well as building a new interchange between the Lougheed Highway and Mary Hill Bypass.

Our speaker is Project Manager Kevin Rozendaal. In his 14 year career with Kiewit Kevin has built some of the most technically challenging projects in North America. Prior to the Pitt River Project, he successfully managed Kiewit’s design-build highway project on I-405 in Kirkland, Washington. His other work includes the San Francisco-Oakland Bridge, the 4-mile design-build tunnel in Whittier, Alaska, and gas turbine power plants in California, Alabama and Louisiana.

Glotman-Simpson and Vancouver Convention Centre Shortlisted for International Structural Awards 2009

The Institution of Structural Engineers has announced the shortlist for the 2009 Structural Awards, the international industry’s most prestigious awards. The awards recognize excellence in structural engineering globally.

Glotman-Simpson has been shortlisted in the ‘Award for Arts or Entertainment Structures’ for their work on the Vancouver Convention Centre expansion.

Ride the Line, Wine & Dine

The BCCR Board of Directors would like to take you for a ride! Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to join a private tour on the world class Canada Line. From Waterfront Station to YVR and back you will experience the views over the Fraser River and the sensation of travelling under False Creek. Afterwards you will dine at the waterfront at Vancouver’s new West Convention Centre.

The $1.9 billion Canada Line Rapid Transit Project is the largest Public Private Partnership in BC and the largest infrastructure project in Canada. It connects downtown Vancouver with Richmond and the Airport and is being partially financed, designed, constructed and maintained by SNC-Lavalin and its partners. The alignment, which is 18.5 km long, consists of an elevated and at-grade guideway, two bridges crossing the Fraser River, a cut and cover tunnel down Cambie Street and a bored tunnel under downtown Vancouver. There are sixteen stations, eight underground, six elevated and two at-grade. The Project is currently on track to be completed ahead of schedule.

Our dinner speaker, Roger Woodhead, the Technical Director for the Canada Line, is responsible for overseeing all engineering and technical issues. He will discuss some of the more interesting aspects of the project and some of the challenges in managing a project of this size and complexity.
